The 2024 Holiday Shopping Season Broak Spending Records

The 2024 holiday shopping season exceeded expectations with U.S. core retail sales reaching a record $994.1 billion, representing 4% growth over 2023. Online sales drove much of the expansion, climbing 8.6% to $296.7 billion as consumers embraced digital-first shopping strategies. Despite ongoing inflation concerns and economic uncertainty, American consumers demonstrated remarkable resilience, returning to pre-pandemic spending patterns and signaling continued confidence in the economic outlook.

What Were the Key Retail Trends This Holiday Season?

E-commerce continued its dominance, with nonstore holiday sales rising 9.5% year-over-year and accounting for nearly 29% of total holiday sales, the highest seasonal share ever recorded. Mobile commerce reached new heights, driving 70% of online orders compared to 67% in 2023.

Social commerce emerged as a significant force, with TikTok Shop sales increasing 223% year-over-year between November 1 and December 31. Approximately 21% of consumers reported making at least one purchase on TikTok Shop in 2024.

In-store shopping also saw resurgence, with brick-and-mortar sales increasing 2.9%. Consumers showed slight preference for physical stores over online based on total traffic during key shopping days.

Which Product Categories Performed Strongest?

Online sales led category performance with 8.6% growth, followed by furniture and home furnishings stores at 5.6%. Electronics and appliance stores grew 3.7%, while health and personal care stores increased 3%.

Apparel emerged as a strong performer, rising 3.6% overall with even stronger 6.7% growth in e-commerce. Jewelry sales increased 4%, reflecting consumers’ willingness to spend on gift-giving categories.

Building materials, garden supply stores, and sporting goods stores showed no growth, suggesting consumers prioritized certain discretionary categories over others while managing budgets.

How Did Consumer Behavior Shape the Season?

Value-seeking behavior dominated consumer decisions. Shoppers concentrated spending during promotional periods, particularly Black Friday through Cyber Monday, which accounted for 8% of total holiday sales.

The last five days before Christmas proved critical, accounting for 10% of all holiday spending as consumers responded to promotions and completed last-minute shopping. December 23 re-emerged as the top shopping day of the season.

Artificial intelligence influenced 19% of all orders between November 1 and December 31, up from 17% in 2023. Retailers using AI for personalized promotions, recommendations, and support captured additional revenue during the critical period.

What Does This Mean for Retail Industry Health?

Full-year 2024 retail sales grew 3.6% to a record $5.28 trillion, reaching the top end of industry forecasts. This performance exceeded the 3.6% average growth rate from 2014 to 2019, suggesting sustained consumer strength.

Retailers hired approximately 438,000 seasonal workers during November and December, consistent with industry projections of 400,000 to 500,000. Employment levels supported operational needs without overextension.

Lower inflation compared with 2023, particularly for goods, contributed to consumer willingness to spend. While prices remain elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels, the moderating trend helped household budgets.

What Challenges Did Retailers Face?

Returns increased significantly, with consumers returning products worth $122 billion globally, expected to grow to $133 billion. This 28% growth in returns pressured retailer margins despite strong top-line sales.

The compressed shopping calendar, with late Thanksgiving timing shifting key shopping days into December, created operational challenges. Only 280,500 seasonal jobs were added in November, down 5% year-over-year.

Competition for consumer attention intensified, with shoppers spreading purchases across more channels and platforms. Retailers needed integrated omnichannel strategies to capture sales across physical and digital touchpoints.
