TAMKO Expands U.S. Operations with New Asphalt Shingle Reprocessing Facility

Northstar Clean Technologies Inc. and TAMKO Shingles have announced plans for Northstar’s first U.S. asphalt shingle reprocessing facility. The new plant will supply TAMKO’s asphalt shingle production facility in Frederick, Maryland.

This expansion marks a significant step in TAMKO’s strategic partnership with Northstar, as the companies work to establish a presence in the Mid-Atlantic region. The area under consideration includes Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and parts of Virginia and West Virginia.

Over the coming months, Northstar and TAMKO will collaborate to determine the optimal location for both Northstar’s processing and recovery facility and TAMKO’s asphalt shingle production. The companies aim to identify a site that maximizes operational efficiency for both parties.

Aidan Mills, President & CEO of Northstar, emphasized the importance of this development for the company’s U.S. market entry in 2025-2026. The decision provides the necessary lead time for site selection and permitting processes. Mills noted the strategic advantages of the Mid-Atlantic region for both Northstar’s selection criteria and TAMKO Shingle’s asset flexibility.

Jeffrey Beyer, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of TAMKO, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. He highlighted the potential environmental benefits of redirecting asphalt shingle waste and the project’s role in promoting sustainability within their communities.

The expansion follows a US$10.0 million strategic investment from TAMKO’s subsidiary, Allmine Paving LLC, into Northstar. This investment, announced in July 2023, includes two phases: US$6.4 million of preferred shares and US$3.6 million of unsecured three-year debentures, contingent on achieving certain milestones.

Northstar, a Canadian clean technology company, focuses on the sustainable recovery and reprocessing of asphalt shingles. The company has developed a proprietary process to extract liquid asphalt, aggregate, and fiber from discarded asphalt shingles for reuse in various industrial applications.

As Northstar and TAMKO move forward with their expansion plans, they aim to position themselves as leaders in the recovery and reprocessing of asphalt shingles in North America. The companies’ collaboration represents a step towards more sustainable practices in the building materials industry, potentially reducing landfill waste and promoting the circular economy.
